Have you sometimes noticed that a deaf person for whom you are interpreting seems to struggle to understand some concepts? 

  • Do they seem confident in a social chat, but less confident in a formal interpreted meeting?

  • Does a deaf client offer unexpected answers to questions that you have interpreted?

  • When they describe events, do you feel like you do not fully understand who they are talking about, or when something happened?

Does this lead you to doubt your skills?!

It is possible that these deaf clients have some form of language dysfluency.

This interactive ‘From Theory to Practice’ session will explore Sarah Haynes’s research for her Masters Degree in Advancing Practice in Signed/Spoken Language Interpreting. It will include summaries of data from deaf and hearing interpreters who engaged in Sarah’s research - What those interpreters say they see when interpreting for those with dysfluent BSL, and what they do in response.

We will:

  • Learn the concept of ‘dysfluent BSL’ and some of the reasons why this is seen in the deaf community.

  • Discuss examples of the language we might see in those with dysfluent BSL.

  • Note our current strategies for working with these clients, and discuss new strategies to best enable those who may have some BSL dysfluency to engage effectively in interpreted interactions.
